Why Your Wi-Fi Is Slower Than You Pay For — And How to Actually Fix It
You're paying for 500 Mbps but getting 80. Here's the real reason your internet underdelivers — and the fixes that actually work, ranked by impact.

You run a speed test, and the number is disappointing. Your plan promises 500 Mbps. Your result shows 87. You call the provider, they send a technician, everything checks out "on their end." The slow speeds stay.
This is one of the most common technology frustrations in modern households — and the maddening part is that the problem is almost never the internet itself. It's everything between the internet and your device.
Here's what's actually happening, and what to do about it in order of impact.
The Cable Modem Is Probably Not the Problem (But Check It Anyway)
Your ISP's signal arrives at your modem. Most modern DOCSIS 3.1 cable modems are capable of speeds well above what any residential plan delivers. If you rent your modem from your ISP, it's almost certainly fine. If you own one, check that it's approved for your provider and plan tier — an older DOCSIS 3.0 modem on a gigabit plan is a real bottleneck.
Modems don't degrade gradually. They either work or they don't. If speeds fluctuate wildly at different times of day (fast in the morning, slow in the evening), that's a network congestion problem on your ISP's infrastructure — nothing you can fix on your end.
Your Router Is Doing More Work Than You Think
The router is where most home speed problems originate. A budget router from 2019, running 24/7 without a restart, handling 15 connected devices, streaming video while someone games — this is not a trivial workload.
The single highest-impact fix in most homes is replacing an old router. Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) routers, which dominated sales from 2016 to 2022, have real limitations. Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) routers offer meaningfully better performance in multi-device households — not because they're faster on a single connection, but because they handle simultaneous connections more efficiently.
If you bought your router more than four years ago, replacing it will likely produce a bigger improvement than anything else on this list.
Before replacing it: try a hard restart. Unplug for 30 seconds. This clears memory leaks and resets the processor state. Many routers run for months without a restart and accumulate performance debt from it. If that solves your problem, set a monthly restart reminder.
Router Placement Is Killing Your Speed
A router in a cabinet, a closet, a corner behind the TV, or on the floor loses significant range and throughput. Wi-Fi signals are radio waves — they spread outward, and physical obstacles absorb or deflect them. Walls, floors, appliances, and aquariums all degrade signal.
Where to place your router:
- Centrally in the home, not at one end
- Elevated — on a shelf or table, not the floor
- In the open, not enclosed in furniture
- Away from microwaves (which operate at the same 2.4 GHz frequency and cause interference) and baby monitors
For a multi-floor home, a single router anywhere is likely a problem. A mesh network system — where two or three nodes work together — is the right solution, not a stronger single router.
The 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz Split Matters
Modern routers broadcast on two frequencies. 2.4 GHz travels farther but is slower and heavily congested (every neighbor's Wi-Fi, your microwave, and Bluetooth devices compete on it). 5 GHz is faster but shorter range.
Most devices default to whichever band is stronger at the time of connection — often the slower 2.4 GHz. Manually connecting devices that are close to your router to the 5 GHz network can significantly improve their speeds. Most router apps let you manage this per device.
If your router shows a single network name for both bands (band steering), you can split them into separate networks — name them differently (e.g., "Home" and "Home_5G") — and connect speed-sensitive devices explicitly to the 5 GHz network.
Ethernet Still Wins
For devices that don't move — gaming consoles, smart TVs, desktop computers, streaming boxes — a wired ethernet connection eliminates every Wi-Fi variable. Speed is faster, latency is lower, connection is stable. The speed difference between Wi-Fi 6 and ethernet for a stationary device is significant and consistent.
If running cables isn't practical, MoCA adapters (which use your existing coaxial cable wiring) or powerline adapters (which use electrical wiring) offer a wired-like connection without drilling.
Check What's on Your Network
A device you've forgotten about may be consuming bandwidth. Smart TVs downloading updates, old smartphones streaming in the background, Ring cameras uploading footage continuously — each has a cost.
Log into your router's admin panel (usually accessed at 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 in a browser) and check the connected device list. Most modern routers show bandwidth usage per device. If something is consuming disproportionate bandwidth, you can throttle or disconnect it.
Also check for unauthorized users. If your Wi-Fi password hasn't been changed in years and you've given it to houseguests, contractors, and delivery people, someone may be leeching bandwidth. Changing your password and reconnecting your own devices takes 20 minutes and can meaningfully improve performance.
DNS Servers Are a Small But Real Gain
When you type a website address, your device asks a DNS server to translate it to an IP address. Your ISP's default DNS servers are often slower than alternatives.
Switching to Google's DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare's DNS (1.1.1.1) typically reduces the time to establish a new connection — not download speed, but the latency of the initial handshake. For web browsing and loading lots of small files, this is perceptible. For large file downloads, it's irrelevant.
You can change DNS servers in your router settings, which applies to all devices on your network at once.
When the Problem Actually Is Your ISP
After fixing the above, if speeds still disappoint, test again — with a device connected by ethernet, at different times of day, across multiple days. If results are consistently well below what you're paying for, that's an ISP problem.
Document the test results with timestamps and call support. ISPs have service level agreements; persistent underdelivery entitles you to a technician visit or, if unresolved, a contract adjustment. Competition between providers in your area — if any exists — gives you leverage.
The unsexy truth is that most home internet speed problems are solvable with a router placement change, a router restart, or a four-year-old router replacement. None of these require technical expertise. They just require knowing that the problem exists.
