Apple released iOS 27 on 14 September 2026. Like iOS 26, it runs on every iPhone from the iPhone 11 onwards, plus the second- and third-generation iPhone SE. No model was dropped this year.

For more than three weeks, phones still on iOS 26 were offered a security update as the main option, with iOS 27 tucked further down. That changed on 8 October. According to MacRumors, iOS 27.0.1 is now "the prominent software update" for those phones. If you own an older iPhone, you have probably just seen it.

We have not measured iOS 27 on older iPhones ourselves. This guide is built from Apple's documentation and the reporting linked throughout.

Same Update, Three Different Phones

iOS 27 installs on all of these models, but it does not do the same things on all of them. MacRumors sorts the supported iPhones into three tiers, and the dividing line is largely memory, which Apple's on-device AI needs:

  • Full: iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air get everything, including the most advanced Siri features.
  • Standard: the iPhone 16 range (including the 16e) and the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max get the new Siri and Apple Intelligence.
  • Without AI: the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, and every model back to the iPhone 11 and the SE, get iOS 27 without Apple Intelligence or the new Siri.

So "iPhone 11 to 15" splits in two. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max get the new Siri. The standard iPhone 15 and everything older get the rest of iOS 27, and that is what the rest of this guide is about.

One more limit applies regardless of model: Siri AI is not available in the EU at launch, and it starts in English only.

What an Older iPhone Does Get

None of these features depend on Apple Intelligence:

  • Liquid Glass, revised. The see-through interface introduced last year gets more consistent refraction, better contrast and sharper app icons, plus a slider to set how clear or tinted the glass looks. If you found iOS 26 hard to read, this is the change most likely to matter to you.
  • Speed. Apple cites app launches up to 30% faster, Photos loading up to 70% faster and AirDrop transfers up to 80% faster. MacRumors also lists an upgraded CPU scheduler and a rebuilt system search on the non-AI tier. Apple has not said whether those percentages hold on every supported model, so treat them as best cases.
  • Find My controls. You can share your location for a custom length of time, set an exact end time, or pause sharing with particular people until the end of the day without them being told. iOS 26 offered three preset durations.
  • iPhone Handoff. If you carry two iPhones on the same number, you can now move between them. It needs your carrier's support, and MacRumors notes that carriers may charge for it.
  • Video in CarPlay, while parked, in newer cars that support it.

What It Doesn't

On the standard iPhone 15 and older, you will not get the new Siri or its separate app. You also miss the AI photo tools (Extend and Reframe), photorealistic Image Playground images, building shortcuts by describing them, and the receipt-scanning bill split in Apple Cash. Siri itself still works as it did on iOS 26.

You Don't Have to Take It Yet

Apple does not force the upgrade. In its own words, it "continues to offer security updates to the previous major operating system version for a period of time" for people who want to wait (Apple Support).

That is happening now. Alongside iOS 27, Apple shipped iOS 26.7, a security-only update that Cult of Mac reports carries 82 fixes. Two weeks later came iOS 26.7.1, which fixes a flaw in how the phone handles certain files. Apple says that flaw "may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals."

To stay on iOS 26 and stay patched:

  1. Open Settings → General → Software Update.
  2. Ignore the large iOS 27.0.1 prompt.
  3. Scroll down to Also Available and install iOS 26.7.1.

Apple has not said how long iOS 26 will keep receiving fixes. Last year's pattern is encouraging: iOS 18.7.7 shipped in April 2026, more than six months after iOS 26 came out.

The one choice that is not safe is doing nothing. An iPhone still on an older build of iOS 26, without 26.7.1, is missing a fix for a flaw Apple says may already have been used against people.

How to Decide

Update now if iOS 26's glass effects bothered you, if you want the Find My changes, or if you simply prefer to be on the current version. On an iPhone 15, 14 or 13, there is no particular reason to hold back.

Wait a few weeks if your phone is an iPhone 11 or 12 with a tired battery (the battery's health is shown under Settings → Battery), or if you depend on an app that has not yet been updated for iOS 27. Apple warns that right after a major update "you might notice a temporary impact on battery life and thermal performance" while the phone re-indexes and downloads new assets in the background. On an older battery, that period is more noticeable. Meanwhile, install iOS 26.7.1.

Either way, back the phone up to iCloud or a computer before a major update.

The Real Choice Is Between Two Patched Versions

The real choice is between iOS 27.0.1 and iOS 26.7.1. Both are patched. On the standard iPhone 15 and older, iOS 27 brings a cleaner interface and a handful of useful controls but none of the new Siri, so waiting costs very little. Staying on an unpatched iOS 26 build does.
